NOTICE
PLANNING BOARD PUBLIC HEARING
MAY 3, 2012

Notice is hereby given that the Planning Board will conduct a Joint Public Hearing with the City Council on Thursday, May 3 at 6:00 P.M., in the City Council Chambers, City Hall, 93 Washington Street, Salem, MA, in accordance with M.G.L. c. 40A, s. 5 for the purpose of amending Section 8.1 of the Zoning Ordinance to comply with requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), including designation of special flood hazard areas within the City of Salem as Zone A, AE, AO or VE on the Essex County Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) issued by FEMA for the administration of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), as shown on map panels 25009: 0414F, 0416F, 0417F, 0418F, 0419F, 0436F, 0437F, 0438F, 0439F, 0441F, 0442F, 0443F, 0527F, 0531F, 0532F, and 0552F, dated July 3, 2012.  These updates to floodplain regulations and the adoption of new FIRM maps are required in order for Salem to remain in compliance with NFIP and for property owners to remain eligible for flood insurance.  In addition, the proposed amended ordinance deletes the requirement for a Planning Board Special Permit in wetland and wetland buffer areas, since this Special Permit is repetitive with Conservation Commission review.  

The complete text of the proposed amendment to the Zoning Ordinance is on file at the Department of Planning and Community Development, 120 Washington St., and is available for inspection during regular business hours.
